Kylian Mbappe made an immediate impact on his Real Madrid debut, scoring to help Los Blancos secure a 2-0 victory over Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday in Warsaw. The French superstar, who joined Madrid this summer after his long-awaited transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, celebrated his first appearance with a clinical goal.
Fede Valverde opened the scoring for the Champions League holders in the 59th minute, finishing from close range after a resilient first-half performance from the Italian Europa League winners. Madrid gained control as the match progressed, and Mbappe sealed the win in the 68th minute with a sharp finish following a pinpoint pass from Jude Bellingham.
The victory handed Madrid a record sixth Super Cup title, and it marked a personal milestone for coach Carlo Ancelotti, who tied the club’s legend Miguel Muñoz with a joint-record 14 trophies as Madrid’s manager.
Mbappe started as the central forward, flanked by Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, giving fans a glimpse of Ancelotti’s plans for the star-studded attack. Bellingham played a more traditional midfield role but remained influential throughout the match.
Atalanta, appearing in their first Super Cup after their surprise Europa League triumph last season, had their moments. Thibaut Courtois made a stunning save early in the second half to deny Mario Pasalic, while Madrid’s Rodrygo grazed the crossbar just before halftime.
Valverde’s opener came as Atalanta’s defense focused on Mbappe’s dangerous movement, allowing the Uruguayan to convert a Vinicius cutback. Despite some heroic saves from Atalanta goalkeeper Juan Musso, Mbappe eventually doubled Madrid’s lead, finishing coolly after Bellingham kept an attack alive and picked out the forward’s run.
Mbappe received a warm ovation from the Madrid faithful when he was substituted in the 83rd minute, marking what is likely the first of many memorable moments in his Real Madrid career.
